Over the last six months or so I have created a bag full of camera gear that has allowed me to become a better photographer. From my DSLR camera to the addition of a drone and a handful of lenses, I now have the tools necessary to create better images. I’ve been using mostly kit lenses to this point and have had good success with them.Since landscape photography is my main interest, having a good wide angle lens is important. The Canon 10-18mm will continues to be a great choice for me most of the time. After learning more from some of my favorite photographers that use longer lenses, I felt the need to upgrade. Like most people, my budget is not enormous so I need to find value and after some trusted advice I went with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM .
Canon has a few different options for this lens and they have a significant affect on pricing. Most of my photos will be shot with the help of a tripod so image stabilization seems to be an unnecessary option. So for under $600 I am getting a very good lens that I will use for many years. This lens is interchangeable between crop sensor and full frame camera bodies so if I upgrade in the future I will not have compatibility issues. Just remember if you are purchasing this product for your crop sensor camera you will have to take into account the change in the effective focal length of the lens.
So far I am very happy with my purchase decision. The external body of the lens has a solid feel but in terms of weight it is surprisingly light. Because of this it won’t weigh you down on your long treks to find great shots. It is also great for fast action photography due to its lightning fast internal zoom motor. Image quality is super sharp, color is great and background blur is easy to achieve.
There are many great lenses available for your Canon, but to me this one is a winner in terms of quality versus value. So if you want to up your game and add an L series lens to your bag this would be a great place to start!
