Kinnickinnic State Park
-Sunday, April 5th 2020- The winter is over and spring is here! We are ready to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather… but hold on….there is an invisible enemy “COVID-19” disrupting our lives.
Our summer vacation plans have either been cancelled or put on hold temporarily. This is very disappointing however we continue to wake up each day and give thanks for the time we’ve been given. Our lives are far from normal and distant travel is not an option so we will explore some local parks and trails instead.
Our first adventure of the spring brings us to River Falls, Wisconsin. Just a few miles to the south and west of River Falls you will find Kinnickinnic State Park. Entry fees have been temporarily waived at all state parks. Check their website to stay up to date.
Entering into the park there are multiple picnic areas with access to marked trails. The main parking area at the west end of the park offers a map showing the parks trail system with distance and difficulty. A scenic overlook platform gives a downstream view of the St Croix River where the Kinnickinnick River enters.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing picnic spot, an easy to moderate hike or a chance to hook into a trophy brown trout, Kinnickinnic State Park is a great destination from spring through fall.
Glen Park
Our second stop of the day brings us into River Falls and to Glen Park. Located on the west side of the city, this park has many activities available to enjoy. Our day was fading quickly but there was time for a quick hike along the river trail.
A steep path beneath the Swinging Bridge brings us down to the Kinnickinnic River and a few neat little waterfalls. Just downstream from here there are multiple trails that lead down to the river near the Lake George dam. The cascading water from the spillway leads to a second smaller falls that pour into the Kinnickinnic.
The sound of the flowing water and the sight of the waterfowl splashing around are a refreshing reminder of spring!
